A referral letter is required to see your specialist in order to request a rebate from Medicare (otherwise you will need to pay for the entire cost of the consultation and will not be able to submit a Medicare rebate). A referral from your general practitioner will generally last twelve months in duration, however a referral from another specialist will only last three months.
